A Journey That Changed Public Health
In 1999, while travelling by train to BCM College, Kottayam, Prof. Monamma Kokkad witnessed passengers smoking inside the compartment. When she objected, they challenged her, saying there was no law prohibiting smoking in public places. Rather than accepting the situation, she chose to seek justice through the courts.
Her Public Interest Litigation resulted in the landmark Kerala High Court judgment that declared smoking in public places illegal. The Court recognized passive smoking as a violation of the fundamental right to life under Article 21 of the Constitution, making it a historic milestone in India's public health movement. This pioneering verdict inspired tobacco control laws and public smoking bans across the country, protecting the health and rights of millions of citizens.
